Happy Founders Day to the Men of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated!
On September 19, 1963 - just four days after the Birmingham church bombing that shook the nation - twelve visionary men gathered at Morgan State College (now Morgan State University) and built something enduring. In a year defined by struggle, they chose to build brotherhood.
Iota Phi Theta officially joined the National Pan-Hellenic Council in 1997, completing the council and strengthening the circle of Black Greek-letter excellence.
Today, as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ® celebrates alongside you, we honor 63 years of scholarship, service, and the unshakeable belief that Black men - organized, educated, and committed - are a force for community uplift.

In 1938, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated ® founder Norma Elizabeth Boyd established the National Non-Partisan Council on Public Affairs — the first full-time congressional lobby created by a minority group. She understood what the thirteen founders of the Congressional Black Caucus would also know in 1971: that progress for the people requires organized, sustained political engagement.
The CBC Foundation was established in 1976 to advance that mission through research, education, and the Annual Legislative Conference — the leading policy convening on issues impacting African Americans and the global Black community. Alpha Kappa Alpha has been present in that work for generations, from our 1938 Council to our 1947 American Council on Human Rights partnership, from our 1939 NAACP life membership to the 2024 launch of the AKA 1908 PAC.
When we gather at ALC 55 — from the Empower ‘08 Policy Breakfast to Capitol Hill — we are not tracing separate histories. We are converging them. Deep, intentional community building is how policy moves from paper to people.
