Overview
The history of the South Central Region dates back to 1924, a pivotal year in the sorority’s growth and expansion. During that time, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® established regional organization structures to better support its rapidly growing membership and chapter network across the United States. That same year marked the chartering of Phi Chapter at Wiley College, the first chapter established west of the Mississippi River. Phi Chapter’s establishment represented a major milestone in the sorority’s national expansion and laid the foundation for what would become one of the organization’s most impactful regions.
The region’s earliest leadership helped establish a culture rooted in perseverance, service, and visionary thinking. Clara Dugan, a member of Phi Chapter, became the first Regional Director, then known as the Southern Deputy of the South Central Region. Under her leadership and the leadership of those who followed, the region continued to grow in membership, influence, and service impact throughout the Southwest.
Today, the South Central Region encompasses Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Texas and is home to more than 130 graduate and undergraduate chapters representing thousands of dedicated members. The region spans vibrant metropolitan cities, historic communities, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and culturally rich communities that continue to shape the identity and spirit of the region.
The South Central Region proudly celebrates a distinguished legacy of leadership within Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. The region is honored to be connected to several International Presidents whose visionary leadership helped strengthen and elevate the sorority on a global scale:

These extraordinary women helped shape Alpha Kappa Alpha through transformative leadership, organizational growth, and impactful initiatives that expanded the sorority’s influence throughout communities across the world.
The South Central Region has also played a historic role in advancing Alpha Kappa Alpha’s national presence. The region hosted the sorority’s first International Convention in the Southwest and became known for helping break barriers related to racial equity and accommodations during a time of segregation in the South. These milestones reflect the courage, determination, and pioneering spirit that continue to define the region today.
Innovation and service remain hallmarks of the South Central Region. Chapters throughout the region lead impactful initiatives focused on educational advancement, health awareness, economic empowerment, civic engagement, environmental stewardship, social justice advocacy, and youth development. Through strategic partnerships and community collaboration, members continue to create lasting impact across the region’s diverse communities.
The South Central Region is equally known for its vibrant spirit of sisterhood and excellence. Members are recognized for their passion, professionalism, hospitality, and commitment to uplifting one another while strengthening the communities they serve. Regional conferences and leadership experiences throughout the region reflect a culture that celebrates both legacy and forward-thinking leadership. For generations, the women of the South Central Region have continued to blaze trails, break barriers, and expand opportunities for future leaders.
