Overview
Officially established as one of the sorority’s original regions during the 1924 regional reorganization, the North Atlantic Region encompasses chapters located throughout Connecticut, Delaware, Eastern New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas. The region reflects a powerful blend of historic institutions, thriving urban centers, and communities deeply rooted in civic engagement and cultural advancement.
As the birthplace region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, the North Atlantic holds a special place in the organization’s history. Founded in 1908 on the campus of Howard University, Alpha Kappa Alpha emerged during a time when opportunities for African American women in higher education and leadership were limited. The women of the North Atlantic Region have continued to build upon that legacy by leading movements of scholarship, social action, advocacy, and service for generations.
The region is home to many of the sorority’s oldest and most distinguished chapters, including Alpha Chapter at Howard University, where the sorority was founded. It has also served as the home region for numerous influential international leaders, educators, elected officials, business executives, and trailblazing women whose contributions have helped shape Alpha Kappa Alpha’s national and global impact.
Throughout its history, the North Atlantic Region has consistently demonstrated a commitment to innovation and excellence. Members have championed initiatives focused on education, health equity, economic empowerment, public policy, voting rights, environmental sustainability, and community development.
