Overview
Established in 1924 as the North Central Region, the region later became known as the Great Lakes Region, a name that reflects both its geographic identity and its powerful legacy within Alpha Kappa Alpha. The region includes chapters throughout Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Western Pennsylvania, and Western New York, representing a vibrant network of graduate and undergraduate members united in service to all mankind.
The story of the Great Lakes Region mirrors the broader story of perseverance, progress, and achievement experienced by African Americans throughout the United States. Through periods of social change, economic transformation, and cultural evolution, the women of the Great Lakes Region have consistently led efforts to uplift communities, advocate for equity, and create opportunities for future generations.
The region is home to some of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®’s most historic chapters. Zeta Chapter, chartered at Wilberforce University in 1916, remains one of the sorority’s oldest undergraduate chapters. Alpha Omega Chapter, originally chartered at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1917, became the sorority’s first graduate chapter and helped establish a strong foundation for graduate membership and leadership within the organization.
Throughout its history, the Great Lakes Region has produced exceptional leaders whose influence has extended across Alpha Kappa Alpha and throughout society. The region proudly claims six International Presidents whose leadership helped shape the sorority’s national and international direction:

- Dr. Eva L. Evans
The Great Lakes Region has also played a significant role in hosting major sorority events, including multiple Boules and leadership gatherings that have helped shape Alpha Kappa Alpha’s history and organizational growth. Cities throughout the region, including Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Detroit have served as important centers for sorority leadership, collaboration, and fellowship.
Known for its strong culture of innovation, the Great Lakes Region has pioneered programs and initiatives that have influenced the sorority on a broader scale. The region initiated the Tri-Community Founders’ Day Celebration, which later inspired the sorority’s cluster model for collaboration and engagement. The region has also demonstrated exceptional philanthropic leadership through its support of the Educational Advancement Foundation and numerous service initiatives focused on education, health, civic engagement, economic empowerment, and social justice.
At the heart of the Great Lakes Region is a deep commitment to sisterhood and servant leadership. Members of the region are recognized for their professionalism, compassion, advocacy, and dedication to uplifting communities through meaningful and measurable service. Whether mentoring young women, supporting local organizations, promoting scholarship, or advancing civic causes, Great Lakes members continue to lead with excellence and purpose.
Guided by the vision of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Founders and strengthened by generations of impactful leadership, the region continues to build upon its remarkable legacy while preparing future generations to lead, serve, and transform the world.
