Overview
The Mid-Atlantic Region was officially established during the 1953 Boule following a historic regional realignment within Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. The creation of the region brought together chapters in North Carolina and Virginia, forming a vibrant network of graduate and undergraduate members united by a shared dedication to service and sisterhood.
Dr. Rose Butler Browne, an accomplished educator, trailblazer, and visionary leader, was appointed as the first Mid-Atlantic Regional Director. Under her leadership, the region quickly established a strong foundation rooted in scholarship, advocacy, and compassionate service to all mankind. The first Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference was held in Newport News, Virginia, with Lambda Omega Chapter serving as host chapter under the national theme, “Our Health, Our Strength.”
Since its inception, the Mid-Atlantic Region has experienced tremendous growth and influence. What began as a newly formed region has expanded into a thriving collective of more than 130 graduate and undergraduate chapters representing thousands of dedicated members across Virginia and North Carolina. The region continues to cultivate leaders who impact their communities locally, nationally, and globally.
The Mid-Atlantic Region has long been recognized for producing strong leadership within Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. Members of the region have served with distinction at every level of the organization and have helped shape the sorority’s strategic direction through visionary leadership, innovative programming, and impactful community engagement.
The Mid-Atlantic Region proudly celebrates its distinction as the home region of two International Presidents of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®:

The region’s commitment to educational advancement and civic engagement has remained central to its identity. Chapters throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region have led initiatives focused on literacy, youth development, health awareness, economic empowerment, environmental stewardship, voter education, and social justice advocacy. Through collaborative partnerships and meaningful outreach efforts, members continue to uplift communities and expand opportunities for future generations.
The phrase “Marvelous Mid-Atlantic” was coined by 25th International President Dr. Norma S. White, whose leadership and influence remain deeply woven into the region’s culture of excellence. The name reflects not only the region’s accomplishments, but also the spirit, resilience, professionalism, and pride that define its members.
The Mid-Atlantic Region is also celebrated for its strong sense of sisterhood and leadership development. From undergraduate members beginning their Alpha Kappa Alpha journey to seasoned members whose decades of service continue to inspire, the region fosters a culture that values mentorship, collaboration, and lifelong engagement.
Today, the Marvelous Mid-Atlantic Region continues to honor its proud history while embracing innovation and growth. Guided by the principles established by Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Founders, the region remains committed to advancing scholarship, cultivating leaders, strengthening communities, and delivering impactful service throughout North Carolina, Virginia, and beyond.
