July 7, 2019
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Sigma Iota Omega Chapter of Fairmont, NC sponsored a Women's Heart Health and Wellness Fair at Biggs Park Mall, Lumberton, NC on Friday, February 1, 2019 in observance of the Sorority's International Impact Day, which brings awareness to the challenges many Americans face in heart health, especially women. According to the Center for Disease Control, heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States with women of the African American community at the top of that statistic (CDC,2018). On Friday's event, over 50 women and men from the community were in attendance in support of the event . Chapter members and members from the community engaged in line dancing, along with the "Carolina Girls" line dancing group who volunteered in support of this event. The event concluded with a walk in the Mall in memoriam of those who have passed away from complications-of the heart, and for those who are currently under care with related complications. Literature regarding heart health, and bottles of water bearing labels with Sigma Iota Omega's contact information were distributed to those who were present.
