SUMMARY OF 2018 SOUTH CENTRAL REGION’S AKA DAY AT THE CAPITOL EVENT (Louisiana)

The South Central Region hosted the Louisiana AKA Day at The Capitol in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on April 24, 2018. Over 200 sorors attended the event with the theme of “Mobilizing the Ivy Power.” Louisiana State Connection Chairman, Soror Markey Pierre and her committee put together an exciting event aimed at ensuring that sorors continued to remain committed and focused on advocacy within the state and region. Louisiana Governor Jon Bell Edwards served as the luncheon speaker for the day, and members of Alpha Phi Alpha also participated in the day’s activities.

The main goals of the event were to sharpen sorors’ leadership skills, enhance sorors’ knowledge of the government system and available resources, and show the Louisiana elected officials that the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha intend to effect change throughout Louisiana and the South Central Region. During the event, sorors were able to meet with public officials and engage in important dialogue about strategies for assisting communities in preparing for the 2018 mid-term elections.

Overall, the event was well-attended and successful. The Region remains grateful to those elected officials that took the time to participate in the event and answer critical questions of South Central Region sorors.
