Environment Sustainability Paradigm

Over 1,400 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority-from as far as the Caribbean-converged upon Anchorage, AK, from July 13-19 2009, for its biennial Leadership Conference. Inspired by the ESP theme, "Environment Sustainability Paradigm," the curriculum and seminars explored ways to advance the Sorority's environmental agenda, while providing the membership with viable strategies to make them leaders.

The four subject areas that dominated the workshops and plenaries were:

Conference presenters included members of the organization and experts such as environmental pioneer Jerome Ringo, president of the Apollo Alliance and an outspoken supporter of increasing diversity in the conservation movement.

In keeping with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's mission to serve communities worldwide, the Program Committee collaborated with the Anchorage, Alaska Department of Parks and Recreation to host a "Day of Service." Over 200 pink-and-green-clad members volunteered at the Fairview Lions Park, beautifying it by pulling weeds, painting park benches, planting flowers and breathing new life into the park.

The event culminated with the planting of a tree in commemoration of Alaska's 50 Years of Statehood and a BBQ where staffers from the Forestry Department treated Alpha Kappa Alpha workers to a sumptuous lunch.

The entire week was a tribute to Alpha Kappa Alpha's commitment to cultivating leaders and serving the communities.
