Greetings and Welcome to the Historic Centennial Web site!
It’s celebration time. Yes, it’s time to celebrate, for it was in 1908 that Ethel Hedgeman Lyle stepped out on the campus of Howard University to proclaim the establishment of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Little did the Founders know that we would grow from nine college women at Howard University to over 200,000 sorors around the globe.
Nearly 50 years ago, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle said that, to her, Alpha Kappa Alpha was “a thing of beauty and a joy forever”—a thing of beauty because it was a symbol of ideals set up and goals achieved; a joy forever because seeing what Alpha Kappa Alpha women were doing in all walks of life was a reason for heart-thrilling pride. If they could see us now!!
Yes, it is time to tell the wonderful Alpha Kappa Alpha Story and celebrate 100 years of service. The Centennial Web site will take you on the Alpha Kappa Alpha journey from North to South and East to West; from the second millennium across the bridge to the 21st Century.
Alpha Kappa Alpha has led the way in such programs as Vocational Guidance, Foreign Fellowship, the Mississippi Health Project, Health Programs, Non-Partisan Council, the American Council on Human Rights, Sickle Cell Anemia, Job Corps, the purchase of Martin Luther King’s birthplace, the establishment of the Educational Advancement Foundation and the African Village Development Program.
We addressed the crises of the 1990’s and made the Net Work. We Blazed New Trails in the Spirit of Alpha Kappa Alpha, and now we are enthusiastically experiencing ESP.
It is my pleasure to chair this awesome celebration. I invite you to Enjoy Sharing and reminiscing about our Past and look forward to an even brighter future as Alpha Kappa Alpha soars to the next 100 years.
